গুঁড়ি গুঁড়ি শব্দে অবিরাম বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে। চারিদিক নিস্তব্ধ - মনে হয় গভীর রাত কিন্তু রাত সাড়ে এগারোটা মাত্র। কিন্তু এই মিরসবারই মেডিকেলের লাশ দেখে মনে হচ্ছে ঘরের আশেপাশেই নেমে এসেছে গুঁড়ি গুঁড়ি বৃষ্টি। একটু আগে সালাম ভ্যানটা এখানে নিয়ে এসেছে। উদ্দেশ্য রমেশ ডোমকে লাশ বুঝিয়ে দেওয়া। পুলিশ কেস। লাশটি এক তরুণীর। বয়স আনুমানিক 24 হবে। স্বামীর সাথে রাগ করে বিষ খেয়ে ফেলেন। পুলিশ এলে শরীর ফুলে ওঠে। ফোলা লাশ সালামের সাথে ময়নাতদন্তের জন্য কে মেডিকেলে পাঠানো হয়েছে। চার বছর ধরে লাশ বহন করে আসছেন কে সালাম। এসব নিয়ে তিনি কখনো ভয় পাননি। তার অনেক ভালো লাগছে। দূর থেকে লাশ আনতে চাইলে সালামের ডাক এ জন্য। অবশ্যই আপনি কম টাকা পাবেন না. প্রতি বডির জন্য তিনি পান ৬০০ টাকা। এতে এক সপ্তাহের মাদকের টাকা হয়ে যায়। সে মর্গের বাইরে রমেশের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে। রমেশ আসলে তাকে লাশ বুঝিয়ে বলে সে চলে যাবে।
গভীর রাতে বের হলেই সে বাংলা সালামের বোতল সব জায়গায় নিয়ে যায়। এভাবে প্রায় সব সময় মর্গের বাইরে বসে থাকতে হয় তাকে। রমেশ সরকারে চাকরি করেন। তাই সঠিক সময় নেই। আর শরীর ছাড়ার উপায় নেই। অফিসিয়াল কাগজে রমেশের আঙুলের ছাপ নিতে হবে। এই প্রতীক্ষার সময়টা বাঙালি খেয়েই কাটে। তিনি পাঁচ দিন আগে একটি লাশ নিয়ে আসেন। সে সময় তিনি অনেক টাকা পেয়েছিলেন। তাই আজ গাঁজার পুরিয়াও আছে। তাই সময় খারাপভাবে ফুরিয়ে যাচ্ছে না। মর্গের বাইরে একটা টুলের পাতা আছে- সেই টুলে বসে সালাম আরেকটা বিড়ি ধরল।
ছোটবেলা থেকেই গাঁজা খাওয়ার অভ্যাস সালামের। এক সময় রেলের বস্তিতে গাঁজা বিক্রি করতেন। পনের বছর বয়সে তিনি সেখান থেকে চলে যান। এরপর থেকে ভ্যান চালান সালাম। এ পেশায় তেমন টাকা নেই দেখে চার বছর আগে বাবুর হাত-পা ধরে লাশ টানার কাজ পান পুলিশ ইন্সপেক্টর। তখন থেকেই সালামের কপাল খুলে যায়। তারও বিয়ে হয়েছে দুই বছর আগে। কিন্তু সংসার টেকেনি। রাতে তার স্ত্রী ফুলবানু নাকি তার শরীরে পচা গন্ধ পায়। তিন মাস আগে ডিভোর্স হয়ে অন্য পুরুষের সঙ্গে চলে যায়। আমি দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে ভাবলাম। অনেকবার এই চাকরি ছেড়ে দিতে চেয়েছি। কিন্তু পারেনি। পেটের অসুখে তিনি এখন এ পেশায় আছেন।
বৃষ্টি একটু আগেই থেমে গেল। এখন মাটিতে সয়াবিনের গন্ধ আর সালাম গাঁজার বিবর্ণ গন্ধে মর্গের চারপাশে এক অন্যরকম পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে বাংলার বোতল প্রায় শেষ- এমন সময় হঠাৎ রমেশ ডোম তার সামনে হাজির। বয়স পঞ্চাশ ছুঁই ছুঁই। কিন্তু এখন শরীরে প্রচণ্ড শক্তি। আর এই বয়সে সে অভিশপ্ত মাল খায়। সারাদিন ঘুমায় আর রাতে এসে লাশের সাথে মারামারি করে। সালামের সামনে দাঁড়ানোর সাথে সাথে সালাম চমকে উঠলেন এবং বললেন-
"কে তুমি? চাচা রমেশ?"
রমেশ অনেকক্ষণ নীরবে হাসল। কিন্তু অন্ধকারে সেই হাসি শুনে হঠাৎ ভয় পেয়ে গেল সালাম। বলেছেন-
"কি খবর রমেশ কাকা? এভাবে হাসছেন কেন?"
রমেশ আবার হাসতে লাগলো "কিছু না রে সালামিয়া- দেখলাম তুমি দ্রাস রাইতে কত আছো"।
সালাম রেগে গেলেন- "হা- আমার ভয় করছে- আর আপনি আমাকে এতক্ষণ বসিয়ে রেখেছিলেন- এই লাশ ঘরের সামনে মেঝেতে পড়ে ছিল।
"না রে সালাম - বাসা থেকে বেরোতে অনেক দেরি হয়ে গেছে। ভেবেছিলাম থানা থেকে লাশ আসছে - তোমাকে রাখবো না - কিন্তু হঠাৎ বৃষ্টি শুরু হয়ে গেল - কি করবো - আমার কাছে নেই। একটি বুক - তাই বৃষ্টি না থামা পর্যন্ত আমি বাইরে যাইনি।"
সালাম তাকিয়ে দেখল রমেশের শরীর শুকিয়ে গেছে। কিন্তু সাদা কাপড়ের লুঙ্গির মতো পড়ে আছে সে। রমেশকে সাদা লুঙ্গি পরা খালি গায়ে ঝোপ-ঝাড় দাড়ি দেখে সালাম একটু ভয় পেয়ে গেল। বলেছেন-
"আমাকে দাও চাচা। কাগজে একটা টিপ। মাইরা। আমি যাব। অনেক দেরি হয়ে গেছে। চল বাসায় যাই।" পকেট থেকে কাগজটা বের করে রমেশের হাতে দিল।
কিন্তু রমেশ দেখতে না পেয়ে বলল-
"আমি তা করতে পারি - কিন্তু আমি তোমাকে আজ যেতে দেব না চান্দু - আমি তোমাকে আমার লাশের কাঁটা দেখাব" - রমেশ আবার হাসল।

"আমি আপনাকে দেখাব কিভাবে একটি লাশ কাটতে হয়। আপনি কখনই দেখেননি আমি কিভাবে একটি লাশ কাটলাম," সে তার মুখে হাসি নিয়ে বলল। হাসি দেখে সালাম হঠাৎ ভয় পেয়ে গেল। যেন একটা জড়তা এসে পড়ে তার মাঝে। সে মাথা নেড়ে সম্মতি জানাল। তারপর রমেশ দেখতে লাগলো কেমন করে। চারিদিকে এক অদ্ভুত পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছে। এই আঁধার রাতে, সারা ঘর একটা ক্ষীণ, ক্ষীণ গন্ধে ভরে গেল। কিন্তু অভিবাদনের কোনো বোধ কাজ করছে না। সে রমেশের সামনে লাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে আছে। গন্ধের উৎস সেখানে হতে পারে।

রমেশ বলল, "চলো, এই কাইলজাটার একটা ব্যবস্থা করি। চলো সালাম। তুমি থাকো। আমি এখনো ঐতাসী। এই যমু আর আসমু। কিছুক্ষণ থাক।" সে দরজা খুলে বাইরে চলে গেল। কুকুরটি তার পিছনে ছিল। কি মনে করে, কুকুরটা ফিরে তাকাল- অন্ধকারে কুকুরের হলুদ চোখ দেখে সালাম ভয় পেয়ে গেল। কিছুক্ষণ পর আবার বেরিয়ে এল। সালাম দিয়ে যেন দম বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। লুঙ্গির গিট্টু থেকে একটা গাঁজা পুরি বের করা শুরু করার সাথে সাথেই সে হঠাৎ চিৎকার আর সালামের চিৎকার শুনতে পেল। কেউ একজন মহিলা কাঁদছে। লাশ ঘর থেকে বের হতেই আসল নমস্কার। দরজা খুলতেই অবাক হয়ে গেল সালাম। বাইরে আরেকটি ভ্যান দাঁড় করানো আছে। সালামের ভ্যান সরানো নিয়ে কিছু লোক তর্ক করছিল। মনে হচ্ছে কেউ ভ্যানে করে লাশ নিয়ে এসেছে। সঙ্গে লাশের স্বজনরাও। ভেতর থেকে তাদের কান্নার আওয়াজ শোনা যাচ্ছিল।
সালাম বেরিয়ে এসে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন-
"কি ব্যাপার ভাই? কার লাশ আনছেন? রমেশ একটু আগে বেরিয়েছে- সে এখন আসবে"- বলে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস নিয়ে ফিল্টারটা ফেলে দিল।
হঠাৎ সামনের জনতা নিস্তব্ধ হয়ে গেল। সবে ভোর হতে শুরু করেছে। পাখিরা আস্তে আস্তে জেগে উঠতে শুরু করেছে। এমন সময়ে বোমার মতো। সামনের সবাই অবাক হয়ে তাকিয়ে আছে তার দিকে। একজন মহিলা সালামের কাছে এসে বললেন,
"এতক্ষণ কে ছিল? ভিতরে কে আছে?"
"আমি রমেশকে বলিনি, চাচা বাইরে গেছেন - তিনি শীঘ্রই ফিরে আসবেন"
বিরক্ত স্বরে বলল সালাম।
মহিলাটি দ্রুত ভ্যানে শরীরের মুখ থেকে কাপড় সরিয়ে বলল-
"যদি রমেশ এখানে আসে - এই কে?"
লাশের মাথা দেখে সালামের মাথা হঠাৎ করেই চক্কর দেয়। সালামের সামনে ভ্যানে সাদা কাপড়ে শুয়ে আছে রমেশ। হঠাৎ সালাম বুঝতে পারলেন তিনি অজ্ঞান হয়ে পড়েছেন। অজ্ঞান হওয়ার ঠিক আগে সে দেখতে পেল রমেশের কুকুরটি ভ্যানের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। কিছুক্ষণ আগের মত হলুদ চোখ নিয়ে তাকিয়ে আছে সে। মুখের পাশে হলুদ চর্বি আছে।
